A storytelling guide for couples planning their wedding flowers in Northumberland & Newcastle by Karen Alexander Weddings – local wedding florist

One of my favourite parts of being a wedding florist across Northumberland and Newcastle and North Yorkshire is watching how the landscape shifts through the seasons. Each change brings new colours, new textures, and new flowers that perfectly capture the mood of that season.

During the design process, I try to include as many seasonal flowers as possible because seasonal flowers perfectly suit the natural light and reflect the colours we find outdoors in the beautiful north east.

From soft spring pastels drifting through the gardens of Northumberland estates, to warm autumn tones glowing against the stone walls of Newcastle’s historic venues, each season brings its own sense of romance.

Here are the flowers I love working with the most, and why they create unforgettable wedding designs.

Spring Wedding Flowers: Soft, Romantic & Delicate

Spring is when nature finally comes to life — and weddings at this time of year often feel like the start of something magical. When I’m creating spring bouquets for weddings across Northumberland or Newcastle, these are the flowers I reach for again and again.

Ranunculus

Their soft, layered petals feel like they’re made for romantic weddings. They add such gentle luxury to bouquets and come in the most stunning range of colours from pure white to deep burgundy.

Tulips

Whether sleek and modern or soft and ruffled, tulips bring movement, elegance, and a natural spring glow and are instantly recognisable as a sign of the new season.

Peonies

Beloved by nearly every bride I meet — and for good reason. Peonies make the whole bouquet feel romantic and generous with their endless ruffles.

Lilac

The scent is unforgettable. Lilac brings a nostalgic, garden-inspired feel that works beautifully in loose, natural wedding arrangements, my favourite to use is actually white lilac.

Summer Wedding Flowers: Light, Bright and Joyful

Summer weddings in the North East have a special brightness to them — long days, warm evenings, and venues surrounded by wild countryside. These flowers help capture that energy especially if the weather forces you to bring the outside in!

Delphinium

Tall and elegant, perfect for statement aisle arrangements or large-scale installations in barns, marquees, or grand Northumberland halls. It’s also the perfect flower to bring dusky blue into your colour palette.

Cosmos

The ultimate ‘dancer’ which will bring delicate movement to your bouquet as you walk down the aisle.. Cosmos bring a soft, whimsical feel to summer bouquets.

Stocks

Beautifully fragrant and naturally full, stock adds height and softness to both bouquets and table centres and are abundantly grown in the north east in summer which means I can use locally sourced flowers.

Sweet Peas

A true favourite for garden-style weddings. Their fluttery petals and gentle scent make every bouquet feel romantic and effortless and they come in endless colour variations.

Autumn Wedding Flowers: Warm, Textured & Wonderfully Atmospheric

This time of year is every florists’ favourite season because autumn weddings in Northumberland have a magic feel to them as we see the countryside change in colour to deep reds, oranges and golds.

Dahlias

Dahlias bring a stunning display to autumn gardens and also to autumn weddings. They are possibly my favourite flowers (after roses). They’re bold, some varieties are perfectly symmetrical and they bring richness and drama to bouquets, arches, and centrepieces. They photograph beautifully against stone barns, woodland backdrops, and candlelit evening receptions but can fit in any venue when used thoughtfully.

Amaranthus

Amaranthus bring the drama to every arrangement with their trailing cords in deep red or lime green. They’re perfect for large installations like fireplace arrangements or archways and also add structure and shape to bridal bouquets.

Winter Wedding Flowers: Moody, Elegant & Structural

Winter weddings in the North East are magical — with crisp air, candlelit venues, and cosy celebration spaces. These flowers help create that refined winter beauty and bring ?? as a contrast to the stark landscape outside

Roses

Classic, timeless, and elegant — perfect for luxurious winter bridal bouquets and my ultimate flower. Endless petals and ruffles, these are just the most versatile flowers and unless you tell me you hate them (which has only happened once) you will find them in all of your wedding flowers.

Berries

Whether used sparingly or in abundance, berries bring deep, seasonal colour that adds richness to winter designs as well as interesting textures against the softness of flower petals.

Thistles

A beautiful nod to the wild northern landscape. Their cool tones and spiky texture work especially well in winter bouquets and buttonholes.

Why Seasonal Flowers Matter for Your Wedding

Choosing flowers that are in season helps ensure:

  • Fresher, longer-lasting wedding flowers
  • Richer colours and natural textures
  • A design that reflects the landscape and time of year
  • A cohesive look across your bridal bouquet, ceremony flowers and centrepieces

As a wedding florist based in Northumberland and Newcastle, I instinctively include seasonal flower varieties in all of your designs to suit your venue, colour palette, and personal style.

Whether you’re dreaming of soft spring lilac, airy summer sweet peas, bold autumn dahlias, or romantic winter roses and berries, I’ll help you create wedding flowers that feel personal, meaningful, and beautifully connected to your day.
